Why “Wayfinding Middle School”?

The name Wayfinding Middle School reflects a deep commitment to understanding adolescence not just as a stage of schooling, but as a critical journey of becoming. Rooted in the metaphor of wayfinding—a concept drawn from Indigenous and traditional knowledge systems—this name acknowledges that early adolescence is a time when students are not simply being taught where to go, but are learning how to navigate.

In traditional wayfinding, orientation is not dependent on fixed maps or external instructions, but on internal cues, relationships, and the ability to read the environment with awareness, adaptability, and trust. In the same way, junior high is a formative time when students begin to:

  • Develop identity: Who am I becoming? What do I believe? How do I want to be known?

  • Interpret behaviour: What is my role in this community? How do I manage the complexity of emotions, relationships, and expectations?

  • Seek belonging: Where do I fit? Who sees me? What contributions can I make?

Wayfinding Middle School is built on the belief that students need support not just in academic growth, but in navigating the complexity of growing up. Our role as educators is not to chart the course for them, but to equip them with the tools, trust, and relationships to find their way with confidence.

The name also affirms that learning is not linear. Like skilled navigators, students learn through exploration, reflection, trial, and realignment. Wayfinding Middle School is a place where students are seen as capable and evolving, where uncertainty is part of growth, and where guidance is offered with humility and hope.
