The Unity Pathways School Division (UPSD) and its schools are narrative settings created for The Belonging Project. The stories within this ecosystem are inspired by real experiences in education and community life, thoughtfully fictionalized to protect privacy and illuminate inclusive practice.

Pathways: A Continuum of Supports and Services
At Unity Pathways, we believe that all students thrive when learning environments are designed with care, flexibility, and purpose. Our continuum of supports and services is more than a model. It's a commitment to inclusive education that honours the whole learner, supports equity, and responds meaningfully to diversity.

What Is a Continuum of Supports and Services?
A continuum is a thoughtfully designed range of actions, strategies, and structures that support each learner’s growth, well-being, and achievement. It is dynamic, fluid, and responsive to changing needs—grounded in evidence-informed practice and shaped by collaboration.

At Unity Pathways, we use a four-tier model to reflect how supports are layered and interconnected:

Individualized Supports
Individualized supports at the Tier 4 level are typically articulated in an individualized plan developed for the team by a collaborative team. At this Tier, division-level support and outside resources, agencies and further assessment may be accessed.

School Supports
Tier 3 supports are those that involve school support team professionals or whole-school practices and are designed inclusively in the classroom or with intentionality for transfer of skills and strategies into the classroom setting.

Differentiated Supports
Tier 2 supports are provided to students by the classroom teacher, inclusive in the classroom. By articulating these supports school-wide, teachers essentially collaborate to share differentiated strategies, accommodations, and interventions that work for students.

Universal Supports
Effective research-based instruction is foundational for success of students and essential when implementing school-based support models. Tier 1 honors and recognizes the essential work of teachers in the classroom.

Our approach to supports and services is rooted in the belief that:
-
Every learner has value, potential, and a right to belong
-
Inclusion is not a placement—it is a way of thinking, acting, and designing
-
Supports must be cumulative and connected across the tiers
-
Families, educators, and community members are essential partners
-
We grow stronger through reflection, iteration, and shared learning

Our continuum is not a fixed program or a hierarchy of student ability. It is a living, evolving framework that allows us to meet students where they are, remove barriers to learning, and ensure that every learner experiences success, dignity, and connection.

Pathways is about designing for possibility. It’s about the belief that with the right supports, every learner can grow, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to their classroom, school, and community.
